The Rural Retreat With Much To Offer
Posted on Friday, July 14 @ 16:36:59 CDT by editor

With very friendly local people, virtually zero crime rate, clean fresh air, beautiful sea & coastline, panoramic views, restricted building for the future and much much more Akbük is an ideal rural location.

HISTORY OF AKBÜK

Akbük, which was once a small fishing village, is situated a mere 18 km from Altınkum, Didim and is 60 km from Bodrum airport thus making it easily accessible.

The area was traditionally a Greek village with only 150 families residing there. Following the Independence of Turkey in 1923 and the subsequent population exchange between Greeks and Turks, the area was uninhabited until 1940.

In 1945, the national government of Turkey allocated some of the area in Akbük to residents of the nearby village Kazıklı, to be utilized for farming and fishing.

On the 20th of September 1991, Akbük became a township, and then in 1992 the area was officially made part of the Didim jurisdiction.

ABOUT AKBÜK

Today, Akbük is still smaller and less commercialized than nearby Altınkum, however that does not mean the area has nothing to offer! The area is covered with protected forests and olive trees, with the background scenery being immensely lush and green due to the tree covered mountains, which provides a beautiful tranquil view.  The region has many small clean beaches and bays with the crystal clear water of the Aegean Sea creating a perfect peaceful setting. Due to the calm waters around Akbuk, the bays in the area are very safe for all the family to enjoy. It is also purported to have the highest oxygen ratio and the lowest humidity of Turkey, making it one of the most naturally healthy environs in which to live. The climate is warm, but being in the bay a gently breeze is refreshing to cool you down especially in the peak summer months.

WHAT THE AREA OFFERS

Since the area became a township in 1991, the proposed development plans are progressing nicely whilst still maintaining the more rural feel to the area.  The Greek chapel on the coast line close to the town center is very well preserved and can be visited as it is open to the public.

The small harbour is host to many different tours especially in the summer season and nearby islands and bays can be visited by yacht tours. A number of boats offer pleasure cruises and fishing trips. If you are a keen angler fishing from almost any where along the Akbük coastline will net you Sea Bass etc. At the local fishing farm you can enjoy a freshly caught fish being diligently prepared for you to eat whilst sitting watching the world go by.

The town centre, although small, has all the provisions and shops needed for everyday living. There are many little local market shops which sell a variety of goods; there is also a chemist, electrical stores, hardware suppliers, plumbers, internet café and a hairdresser in the area.

Perhaps the best place for shopping however is the local weekly market, held on a Friday and which also serves as a social gathering! The market is fairly large and as well as the local farmers selling their fresh produce, you can also purchase clothing, household goods and gardening plants such as Olive trees,

Grapevines, roses and a variety of bedding plants. As with custom in Turkey, it is expected that you haggle at the market for good prices, this also adds to the fun!

The Friday market is the place to purchase all your provisions and practice the skill of haggling

DINING AND NIGHTLIFE

There are a growing number of small restaurants and cafes within the area, the İpek Yolu (Silk Road) is a quality fish restaurant offering traditional Turkish cuisine in comfortable & beautiful surroundings, while next door is the Pizza Pansion, a family run business serving freshly cooked food at very cheap prices and you can watch the food being cooked in their clay oven.

Jokers Bar & Disco next to harbour offers all day meals and snacks. Many more eateries are located along the coast road and town centre.

Some of the bars also have traditional Turkish Folk bands playing so you can relax and enjoy the sounds whilst having a drink or a meal.
